When an individual is struggling with mental health challenges and addiction, there are often deeper issues present. However, it takes time, support, and patience to address these topics, which may have been buried for years. In individual therapy at pH Wellness, clients are guided and supported on their path to discovering their deep issues. As a result, they can gain clarity in their challenges and how they have arrived where they are. However, they also learn what they need to do to make changes in their lives that can help them regain their health, wellness, and quality of life.

Deeper Issues Behind Addiction

An individual’s path to addiction and substance abuse is unique to them. However, common risk factors include:

  • Childhood abuse
  • Family history of substance abuse
  • Mental health challenges
  • Family history of mental health issues

These risk factors can contribute to deeper issues that exist behind addiction. Childhood abuse and a family history of substance abuse often cause individuals to build patterns of thoughts, feelings, and actions that keep them trapped in addiction, always going back to substance abuse.

However, a family history of both addiction and mental health issues can also cause individuals to struggle more with addiction. Therefore, highlighting this history can help individuals understand why they are struggling and discover the deep issues that are behind their challenges with addiction.

Individual Therapy at pH Wellness

During individual therapy, clients work with a clinician one-on-one. They build a relationship with this clinician as they share more about their current and past history of challenges. Because the sessions are one-on-one, clinicians design and structure them based on the client’s unique needs. Therefore, they give clients the best chance to uncover their deeper challenges with addiction with individualized guidance and support.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

One type of psychotherapy at pH Wellness is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is designed around the understanding that individuals have specific feeling, thinking, and acting patterns. These patterns all interact, so an individual’s feelings and thoughts affect each other. This is also true of feeling, thinking, and acting.

In CBT, clients work with a clinician to understand their patterns and how they influence their challenges with addiction. Many of these patterns are the result of a deeper issue that has been influencing a client’s substance abuse. When the patterns are uncovered, it often helps clients to see where they originated from. Additionally, CBT gives clients guidance on how to change these patterns. Therefore, assisting the clients to ultimately heal from the deeper issues that surround a client’s challenges with addiction.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Based on the concepts of CBT, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is designed to help clients understand and accept opposite realities. This is helpful for individuals who struggle with strong emotions. However, it is also effective for clients struggling with addiction.

Through DBT, clients focus on self-awareness. As a result, they dive into their history, thoughts, feelings, and actions. This gives them a clear understanding of themselves, including their challenges with addiction. In DBT, clients also learn skills such as distress tolerance and emotional regulation, which help them recover from addiction.

Gaining Clarity in Individual Therapy

Recovering from addiction requires change. However, to change, individuals must first see the deeper issues that have contributed to their challenges with addiction. Individual therapy helps clients to discover their deep issues. By working with a counselor, clients are guided onto a path of self-discovery. As such, they learn what has played a role in their development of addiction and how they can make changes toward improved well-being and sobriety.

Learning Skills in Individual Therapy

As clients gain clarity in individual therapy, they have a better understanding of themselves and how addiction has crept into their lives. However, the ultimate goal of treatment is for clients to make changes and recover from addiction. Individual therapy offers a place for clients to learn skills. They learn how to communicate with others, regulate emotions, and avoid triggers that can play a role in relapse. Ultimately, these skills are best learned in individual treatment, where clients and counselors can focus on the most helpful and effective tools for the individual.

Individual Therapy: One Piece of Treatment

Taking a deep dive into the self during individual therapy is an important part of addiction treatment. However, effective addiction treatment is not solely individual therapy. At pH Wellness, clients gain skills to recover from addiction due to the well-rounded approach to treatment. Along with individual therapy, clients have an opportunity to participate in detox, group therapy, peer support, exercise programs, and other holistic treatment options. As a result, individual therapy helps clients understand and work on deep issues while working on these issues in other settings, which gives them the skills they need to recover in the long term.

Addiction is a disease that causes many challenges, and every individual who struggles with addiction does so due to a variety of factors. Understanding the pieces that have contributed to addiction is important in healing. At pH Wellness, we offer clients a variety of treatment options, including individual therapy. Through individual therapy, our clients learn about their deep challenges related to addiction and how they can make changes that help them rebuild their lives after treatment.
